Toast to ReCOvery event donates funds to Oskar Blues CAN’d Aid Foundation.
Asheville, N.C., October 16, 2013 – In response to the massive flooding that struck Colorado in September, local Western North Carolina businesses recently rallied together to provide aid to Boulder-area communities. Spearheaded by the Outdoor Gear Builders of WNC, Darby Communications, Oskar Blues Brewery, and Prestige Subaru, the Toast to ReCOvery fundraiser successfully raised almost $5,700 towards flood relief efforts. The proceeds will be donated to the Oskar Blues CAN’d Aid Foundation, which provides support to the communities of Lyons and Longmont, CO; two areas that experienced the most excessive flood damage.
“Because of the strong ties that Asheville has built with the Boulder community over the years, we felt a particularly strong desire to assist with flood relief efforts,” said Coral Darby, founder of Darby Communications. “It was truly inspiring to see so many Western North Carolina businesses come together to help our friends in Colorado.”
For a suggested $20 donation, event attendees enjoyed food provided by Moe’s Original Bar B Que, Dough, Smiling Hara Tempeh, and Woody’s Pizza, sipped beer donated by Oskar Blues Brewery, and listened to a live bluegrass performance from Asheville band Old North State. Liquidlogic, a member of the Outdoor Gear Builders of WNC, donated a Stinger creek boat for a raffle, while other members, including Bellyak, Eagles Nest Outfitters, and Watershed Drybags, donated silent auction items. In addition, Recover Brands designed and sold commemorative Colorado Flood Support t-shirts, with $10 from each shirt going to the fundraiser. Fellow OGB members Astral, American Backcountry, Legacy Paddle Sports, SylvanSport, and Swaygo Gear provided other event support.
Numerous other local and national companies provided additional silent auction items or other event assistance, including: The Adventure Center at Biltmore Estates, Asheville Outdoor Center, Asheville Treetops Adventure Park, Astral, AT Paddles, Biltmore Print and Image, Black Dome Mountain Sports, Blue Moon Water, Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine, Bomber Gear, Camp Carolina, Confluence Watersports, Effort Inc., Enter The Earth, The Gorge Zipline Canopy Adventures, Headsweats, KEEN, Mast General Store, Navitat, radio stations 105.9 The Mountain and 98.1 The River, Rental Me This, Signarama, SimpleShot Shooting Sports, Sport Hansa, Vasque, USA Raft, and Wildwater Zipline Canopy Tours.
The event was also supported by AdvantageWest through funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA). As the regional economic development partnership for the 23 westernmost counties of North Carolina, AdvantageWest helped spearhead the creation of the Outdoor Gear Builders of WNC as part of the EDA-funded WNC AgriVentures grant.
“The outdoor community is so very tight knit, it meant a lot to every member of the OGB that we could band together and help a great cause,” said Natalie DeRatt, Media/Marketing Director for Eagles Nest Outfitters and member of the Outdoor Gear Builders of WNC. “The energy at the fundraiser was a true indicator of the natural synergy between all involved, and we hope this is just the beginning of more fun-filled and impactful events.”
