Using the Goal Zero Torch

by Josh Duke

If you browse any outdoor site or Instagram page these days, you will notice that the word “minimalist” will pop up again and again. I find myself trying to take less and less gear when I go kayak camping or when I travel. These efforts led me to the Torch 250 Flashlight. I have been using the Torch for about 6 months now and it has exceeded my expectations. It has become a great tool to have on the water, while camping, and even while duck hunting.

Here are a few of the main features of the Torch 250 from Goal Zero’s website:

Multiple Light Options for Every Situation

The Torch 250 can be used as a flashlight, floodlight or red emergency light. Save on power with bright and half-bright modes.

Stay Connected During an Outage

An integrated USB port charges phones and boosts tablets to stay connected with its long-lasting, advanced lithium battery.

Recharge Anywhere

Built-in USB charging cable, solar panel and hand-crank allow for light anywhere. The Torch also has durable, rugged construction.

How I use the Torch might differ from others, because my primary outdoor activity is kayaking. When kayak camping, it is important to only pack the essentials. I love that I can pack a flashlight that is rugged, solar powered, and can charge my phone, GoPro, etc. and I don’t have to worry about running out of juice when I am syncing and editing GoPro photos in the middle of nowhere.

The Torch is also great to have with you while duck hunting. Since I am typically paddling out to my duck spots when it is pitch black, I tie down the Torch to the front of my kayak so I can see and be seen. Based on how dark and foggy it is, I will also turn on the red lights just to make sure I can be seen by boaters. If I am paddling through rougher waters, I keep the Torch 250 tucked away in an Outdoor Research Ultralight Dry Sack for safekeeping.

Another way the Torch can be used is keeping it in your bag during a day of exploration. Whether you are exploring a new city, new trails, or new water, it takes up very little space and is worth packing. Plus, we all know we want some extra juice for our iPhones at the end of the day to edit our photos for Instagram.

Goal Zero is an amazing company that makes incredible products that I love to use. You can read more about who they are and  why they exist by clicking here.

Best of luck on your next adventure!
