Cooking on a Jetboil

by Jon DeMeo

After the first time I used my Jetboil, I fell in love.  It is fast, convenient and packs down into itself with everything you need to get started.  The Jetboil I currently own and love is the JetBoil Flash.

If you are new to Jetboil, here is an overview of the product:

  1. Jetboil is a cooking system used for hiking, biking ,camping and any other outdoor activity where you may need to eat on the go.
  2. It can boil water in just over 2 minutes.
  3. There are accessories you can purchase for it to encompass other styles of cooking like a frying pan or a coffee press.

I have found that the Jetboil is a hit when camping and provides a fast way to make a meal when you either don’t have the ability to make a fire or don’t have the time to.  I have tried a few types of food with the Jetboil including Mountain House and Alpine Aire.  As you boil water in the Jetboil Flash, it has a heat meter on the side, which shows when it has reached full boil. The logo will turn yellow when it is done and then you know to turn the fuel off.

I also own the Jetboil Frying Pan and have used it to cook dishes such as Huevos Rancheros on it for breakfast. As long as you clean it soon after the meal, I have had no problems with it sticking to the pan (All I use is water as an initial cleanser).  One tool that helps clean it is the GSI Scraper because it provides the opportunity to scrap the pan properly without damaging it.  To use the frying pan, you need to have a Pot Support or the pan will not sit properly on the Jetboil Flash.

Jetboil provides great recipes, including drink options that can be used in conjunction with the Jetboil. They offer accessories including a French Press add-on and other options.

If you need an on-the-go cooking system, I highly recommend the Jetboil Flash.
