The Uke Life is the Life for me!

Howdy ENOpians!

You’re sitting around a bonfire with a group of friends, roasting hot dogs and marshmallows and aiming your headlamp light in the eyes of the person across from you.  You go over everyone’s busy week and plans for the next one.  Someone throws another log on and you all watch the glowing ash rise up into the night sky.  You feel the heat on your face and hear sighs of contentment all around.  Sooner or later, you know that someone will pull out a guitar.

Before you reach for your guitar, you should consider a highly underrated alternative:  the ukulele.

Ukuleles are four-string instruments with a standard G C E A tuning.  They are relatively inexpensive – about $40-60 for a standard, beginner uke.  They are also very lightweight and will conveniently travel around with you anywhere you go.

Start by learning these easy, basic chords:

With these chords alone, you can play many awesome tunes, like

Somewhere Over the Rainbow – IZ

  • chords:  C, Em, F, G, Am

Float On – Modest Mouse

  • chords:  G, Bm, Em

No Woman No Cry – Bob Marley

  • chords:  C, G, Am, F

Hotel California – The Eagles

  • chords:  Am, E, G, D, F, C, Dm

The best part about the ukulele is that it is a very cheerful instrument.  Throw in a couple more ukuleles to make a uke band, and you have an instant mood raiser for everyone!

So the next time you’re relaxing in your hammock and you get the urge to have a quick jam session, opt for a ukulele.  You’re in for a good time!
