Be Cool and Do Yoga

About a month ago, I finally decided to take a yoga class. The climbing gym I’ve been going to for about two years now has free yoga classes for members, but I just never went. I thought it was only for girls, and I didn’t want it to get in the way of my climb time.

If you’ve ever done a sport, you know that flexibility is key. I’m not flexible at all, and it was starting to hurt my climbing. So I finally decided to go to my first yoga class, solely to work on my flexibility. I’ll admit I did have a tough time with some of the poses since I’m about as flexible as a stick, but there were some I could do with ease and really enjoyed.

Here are 5 yoga poses that almost anyone can start out doing:

1. Mountain Pose: It’s pretty simple, where you stand straight with your feet together and reach high to the sky with your hands. My yoga instructor pointed something out where if you bend your wrists to get a little stretch you’re basically half way to doing a handstand.

2. Tree Pose: Stand comfortably on both feet and shift all your weight to your right leg. Bring the sole of your left foot inside your right thigh and be sure to keep your hips pointing forward. Once you’re balanced, bring your hands above your head, shoulder width apart, with your palms facing each other and hold for about 30 seconds, then switch.

  • Warrior: One of my favorites. Stay standing and spread your legs about 3 to 4 feet apart. Keep your left foot planted and then turn your right foot 90 degrees so it’s pointing forward. From there, lean forward so all your weight’s on your right foot and raise you right arm in the front and left arm behind. Hold it for about a minute and then switch directions.

4. Upward-Facing Dog: Lie face down on the floor with your thumbs under your shoulders and lift your upper torso up. Make sure your pelvis is pushing down along with your shoulder as your chest points forward.

5. Child’s Pose: Start out kneeling down with your back straight. Simple lean forward with your arms pointing straight in front of your until the crown of your head touches the ground. Press down with your chest towards your knees as far as you comfortably can.

As I said before, these are some beginner poses that I think almost anyone can do. If you decide you enjoy relaxing in these poses you might want to take a yoga class where you can get proper instruction and actually go through en entire routine. I’d highly recommend doing that because at the end, it’s so relaxing.
